San Francisco was exciting. It holds many extreme elements together in the most cohesive bond. I absolutely love LA, but there’s something about SF everytime I go that makes me wish I could tolerate the cooler climate up there. I love my sunny weather, and won’t be changing residence anytime soon. Anyway, meeting members of the Femme DJ collective was really nice, since I’ve been a member for the last year or so, but never got a chance to connect with all the ladies, and also, there were several new additions to the group. DJ LadyHouse orchestrated a weekend of photo shoots, female bonding and an all Femme lineup at the newest hotspot, The Supper Club, a swank venue out of Amsterdam.

The players that weekend were Amber Reyn, DJ Icon, LadyHouse, Noetic, Queen Agnes B and myself. Shauna Stein was the master behind the camera. The day started off with all the Femmes gathering together in a total of 3 cars and caravanning through the industrial district of the East Bay, scouting shooting locations. After finding a good spot, we unloaded, and the girls set up shop. No sooner did the last touches of lip gloss hit Icon’s lips, when a cop in an unmarked vehicle pulls up and asks us what we’re doing. “What’s going on here? Who’s in charge?! Show me some ID!” LadyHouse steps up. After some quiet conversation, it seemed she had just worked her charm, when out of one of the cars a voice shouts, “Let me see YOUR ID! Are you a real cop?” The cop jerks his head, demanding, “You! Get out of the car! Show me some ID!” I was filled with dread. Click Here To Read More. . .

Ever have those gigs where you are a little more intimate with your audience, and then some fool comes up with an ego to prove in such a big way, that you feel every last ounce of your patience has been sucked dry? That’s what happened to me tonight. I think every DJ has had this happen, and even more so for the ladies, when…dare I say it…a man feels like he has to conquer your presence either by trying to mess up your mix or sleazing all over you, trying to get a date. A group of friends who were clearly on the make for some Hollywood style networking were at The Standard, and 2 of them were relentless. The first guy bugged me for my business card until I finally gave him one, thinking it would appease him so he would go away. Right then, I knew that was the wrong move. After aggressively promoting himself as an artist he felt entitled to inform me that he was going to take me out—this after I made clear I had a boyfriend—to which I retorted, “That card is for business purposes only—let me make that very clear…I am not giving that to you because I am interested in a date.” He finally retreated to the group. Then another one came up to me, just as I was about to throw the next record into the mix, and acted like he was going to mess with the turntables. I gave him “the warning look” but he got in my face anyway, and started with, “Let me show you something, I’m a DJ too.” To which I calmly yet firmly replied, “Then you can appreciate the fact that I’m in a middle of a mix, and the record is about to end, so you will let me finish.” He got in my face even more, and I had to say, “if you don’t back off and let me do my job, I will call security.” He came back with, “You don’t know who I am, do you?! You don’t recognize me?” Man, I don’t care who you are, but if you are truly a fellow DJ, you would know not to pull that kind of ego trip! And where was security by the way? The place was so busy, that they were off regulating other parts of the crowd. I was left out to dry, like a towel in the wind. I like to be polite at all costs, especially since people are out to have a good time, and substances can get the better of them, but come on folks, this is unacceptable. The challenge here was to maintain composure while also staying focused on the performance. I respect the DJ who is able to do this while still remaining every inch a professional. I welcome any of you ladies to share your stories of handling tough situations, performance, business or otherwise, with assertiveness and tact, to raise the level of respect for our profession.

DJ Syrena  Sep 26 2005 - 11:03pm

Today, I had the opportunity to audition for MTV. They are producing a pilot that is a competition show for the Low-Rider set, hosted by Hip Hop artist, Chingy. Not quite my style, but I figured it would be a fun experience to go through the process. I mean, you never know, ya know?

They were looking for a female DJ to co-host the show, and they must have located everyone in LA to come in. When i entered the waiting area, sitting there was none other than Charissa Saverio, DJ Rap, one of my biggest DJ role models. She was instantly friendly, and very real. We discussed the theme of the show, and who might be right for the role. It turned out the DJ before her was Ladytribe, definite queen of the Low-Rider scene, in addition to being a Hip Hop DJ. I had seen her tricked-out pink truck with her name in graffiti art emblazoned across the back, parked in front of the building. I totally agreed, her reputation in the car show scene is far-reaching, and she would be the perfect fit.

Rap was then called in to audition, and shortly after, 2 other DJ's came in that I knew. Pesce, who plays Hip Hop at a lot of the Hollywood industry parties, and Daisy O'Dell, an Indie rock DJ, whom I play with at The Standard, and who also just got booked to play on Gwen Stefani's tour! Nice one! It was interesting to see how wide the range was for their casting pool.

When I went in for my audition, they had me introduce myself, and read some lines from the script. It became clear they were looking for someone with A LOT of enthusiasm and physical energy. "Go bigger! More enthusiasm! Throw your arm up in the air when you say Chingy's name!" If anything, I left the MTV building with a big smile on my face and feeling hyped after all that!

Whether or not I am right for the part, I was excited to be called in, and to have the opportunity to connect and re-connect with some great DJs.

DJ Syrena  Apr 16 2005 - 12:52am

So I just got back from this amazing event incorporating the brilliant art of urban artists with a DJ providing the atmospheric soundscapes, while super stylee 20 & 30-somethings congregated to admire and purchase the very art their lifestyles inspired. It's been a while since I've been to a such a noteworthy event of the art gallery meets DJ realm, and I am very excited to to be a part of the next event on May 21st at PROJECT: STUDIO in Los Angeles.

Mike Siegel, curator, secured a landscaping architect's office for 3 months, in which he is launching several shows with varying themes. Tonight's visit was a scoping out of "the scene" and it was exactly that in quality proportions. Artwork that speaks to our overstimulated minds, music that makes you groove through the gallery, pretty people to bump into, and all you can drink libations for a $10 donation--doesn't get much better than that!

When I was asked to perform at the May 21st show, I was more than happy to oblige, since the theme is "Sugar & Spice - a group show from the fairer sex" with proceeds to benefit Step Up Women's Network, a nonprofit, membership organization dedicated to strengthening community resources for women and girls, through hands-on community service, mentoring, and fundraising for women’s health and critical issues. All exhibiting and performing artists are women. Selectress is proud to be a supporting sponsor of this event. If you are in the LA area, come check it!

DJ Syrena  Mar 31 2005 - 11:16am

I did it. I upgraded my studio! The Mini runs great, takes up as much desk space as a cd case, and I tricked it out with Reason 3.0, which has some great new bells and whistles. My creative space got a lot more zen when I did away with my 1st issue G4 and OS 9 system. Next on the list is Logic 7. It took sacrificing my trip to Miami this year, but in the long run, it will be worth it. I'm spending as much time possible in the studio, which means I won't DJ as much, but watch out, I'll be comin' atcha full force very soon!

In the meantime, more interviews are coming your way, with DJ Amber next in the cue. If any of you fine ladies have some stories to tell of Miami mayhem or anywhere else in the world, submit an article or hit me up!

DJ Syrena  Mar 5 2005 - 10:40am

I received a strange request the other day. Actually, I receive a lot of strange requests in my line of work, but this one was quite daunting at first. It came in the form of an email, which I almost deleted in my flurry of checking off all the spam. But the subject line caught my attention “event in Kuwait”. It was so out of the ordinary, I decided open it. Inside it revealed a promoter contacting me about DJ’ing in Kuwait. Kuwait! Did they even have a scene there? It was a brief message, a few lines saying that even though they do not have clubs there as they are an Islamist nation, they have private parties in the villas every Thursday and Friday, with a request for my rate and country of passport. A few male DJs of French origin were cited as previous guests.

Considering the current state of affairs in the middle east, and the fact that Kuwait has not yet granted women the right to vote, this did not ease my concern as an American woman. Still, I was curious as to how he found out about me. I replied very courteously that I was interested in visiting his country, and that I would like to know how he heard of me and more about what the parties were like, before discussing my fee. I added I had concerns for my safety as an American woman. In the meantime I asked a few of my jet set DJ friends if they’d ever been or heard of anyone DJ’ing in Kuwait. I was met with a mixture of shock and caution. The promoter replied the next day, requesting my phone number, saying he would call me so we could discuss things personally, but the call never came. This brings me to the topic at hand.

You are a female DJ. You are independent and booking your own gigs. How do you handle it so that you are assured of a legitimate booking, especially across international borders? If you are one of the fortunate artists to have a manager and/or booking agent, then you already have someone sorting out the logistics and details of your gigs for you. It can involve a lot of work, writing up contracts, riders, negotiating fees and making travel arrangements, and that’s not including the long distance calls. The most important things to keep in mind are: establishing a professional repore, references, safety, and contracts.

Karlyn Neel, aka DJ LadyHouse of San Francisco, Californa, recently toured in Lima, Peru. She secured the booking and made all arrangements herself for a 12-day stay.

Drum n Bass/UK Garage event, Century Club, Los Angeles, CA – February 12, 2005

It’s not often there is a Drum ‘n Bass event that takes over a major venue in Los Angeles such as the Century Club, especially on a Saturday night. Yet this was the second event of its kind to take over a club that is normally filled with revelers that adhere to a strict dress code, and pay VIP entrance fees to hear the Pop Top 40 and bling-bling Hip Hop tunes that permeate the lavish, cavernous rooms.

Grapevinez, a promotional group headed by MCMC, an LA transplant from the UK, has been fast and steadily making noise of great proportion in the local Drum ‘n Bass scene. The first major event was the notable “History” which was received to wild success on a Sunday night, featuring all-star lineups in 4 areas, with J Magik, Adam F and Photek headlining. It was only natural that the second event was met with great anticipation, especially since this time the lineup featured a decidedly “liquid” vibe, and included an “Aphrodisiac” room, sponsored by Grapey Baby, with an all-female lineup of UK Garage flavor.
